5.3.10 Cobb County School District Awards Murdock Elementary School HVAC Renovation to YLH Construction
YLH was awarded the HVAC Renovation project at Murdock Elementary School in Marietta, Georgia. The project includes demolition and replacement of all ceilings and HVAC systems throughout the school. The contract amount is $1,330,000 and work will be started and completed over the school system’s Summer break. This is YLH’s second project with Cobb County Schools.
12.3.09 DBIA Southeast Award Presented to YLH
The Design-Build Institute of America presented the award for Best Project in the Public Sector Under $15 million to YLH for their Cobb County Public Safety Village Education Building. This one-of-a-kind project opened this Fall to rave reviews. The facility’s director, Scott Dodson, had this to say about the project: “I wanted to let you know how much we appreciated all of the efforts by YLH Construction and Pieper, O’Brien, Herr Architects. With many hours of researching what we wanted, the finished building is far beyond what any of us could imagine. From start to finish the design/build team could not have worked out better. The Cobb County Safety Village is the pride of Cobb County. Other county departments are looking at the process for the construction of other county facilities.” The DBIA formally presented the award to YLH at a luncheon at Villa Christina in Atlanta.
9.5.09 Towers High School Career Technology Addition Design/Build Awarded to YLH
The DeKalb County School System awarded the contract for design and construction of the Career Technology addition and bus loop at Towers High School in Decatur, Georgia, to YLH Construction Company. The project will house space for the school's business education, health occupations, pharmacy and broadcast production programs. YLH will also construct a new bus drive and turnaround on the site. YLH teamed with Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart & Stewart Architects to design the building. The project is valued at $2,210,000 and is YLH's first project for DeKalb County schools.
8.14.09 YLH Awarded Interior Expansion of Location Georgia/Electrical Cities of Georgia Headquarters
YLH Construction Company will perform interior construction of Location Georgia/Electrical Cities of Georgia's headquarters expansion at Centergy I in Atlanta, Georgia. The project was awarded by Gateway Development. This will be YLH's third project at Centergy I and first with Location Georgia/Electrical Cities of Georgia.
7.31.09 Cobb County Celebrates Grand Opening of Public Safety Village Education Building
The grand opening of the new Cobb County Public Safety Village Education Building was held on Friday, July 31, 2009, and attended by the Public Safety Commission, the Cobb County Commission and many other local politicians and residents. YLH Construction Company was the design/builder of the exciting, new project which houses classrooms, an auditorium, meeting space, offices and the interactive "Sparky's House", which allows students to experience being inside a burning building. The project's main corridor simulates a streetscape with classrooms appearing as storefronts leading to the Strand Theater. The building is 27,000 sq. ft. and valued at $4.5 million.
5.14.09 - YLH Celebrates Grand Opening of Hotel Palomar Atlanta – Midtown
YLH Construction Company, along with Kim King Associates and Kimpton Hotels celebrated the Grand Opening of the Hotel Palomar Atlanta – Midtown on Thursday, May 14th. The Hotel Palomar in Midtown has been one of the most anticipated projects in Atlanta’s recent history. Performances by the Atlanta Drum Line and Atlanta’s own “Moving in the Spirit” dance company welcomed the beginning of the commemoration of the newest addition to the Atlanta’s movement to keep “Art in Motion,” which is the theme of the hotel. The Hotel Palomar features photography, paintings and sculptures from local Atlanta artists while the hotel’s 17 story structure and 304 guestrooms make the building a work of art itself. Hotel Palomar also boasts a majestic ballroom, meeting rooms, 3 levels of parking as well as Pacci, a full service restaurant and the terrace level bar Alto Rex.
The festivities began with Palomar’s General Manager Mark Fischer welcoming a crowd of over 800 inviting all to consider his new nickname for Atlanta, “Artlanta.” Speeches followed from Butch Ross, executive director of Gulch Real Estate, Beau King, Chief Executive Officer of YLH Construction and President of Kim King Associates, and Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin.
Mayor Franklin praised the vision of the Hotel Palomar, citing it as the first hotel built in Midtown in over 20 years. She also suggested that with the construction of the new hotel and the creation of hundreds of new jobs the Palomar will help revitalize the state of Atlanta’s struggling economy. After the mayor’s speech the group of distinguished guests, including YLH’s CEO Beau King, cut the leopard print ribbon to mark the official opening of what is sure to be a new Atlanta icon.
10.1.08 - Clayton State University Dedicates New School of Business Building
Clayton State University held its ceremonial dedication and ribbon cutting for the new School of Business building recently completed by YLH Construction Company. The project was hailed as a signature building for the campus and an important part of enhancing the reputation of the business school. Dr. Jacob Chacko, Dean of the School of Business and Dr. Thomas Harden presided over the celebration. The building is 17,900 square feet with an ICF and steel structure, brick, granite and curtain wall skin and standing seam metal roof. CSU also expressed pride in the environmentally responsible construction methods used on the project. In addition to saving as many existing trees as possible, through the use of insulated concrete form walls and glass curtain wall, the building will have greatly reduced energy usage. This was YLH’s first project for Clayton State University.
6.2.08 - YLH Awarded Addition and Renovation to Bethune Elementary School
The Fulton County School Board awarded the $6.2 million addition and renovation of Bethune Elementary School to YLH Construction Company. The project in College Park, Georgia, includes a 2-level, 30,000 SF classroom addition. Upon completion of the addition, YLH will completely renovate the HVAC systems in the 79,000 SF existing school. The project architect is Good-Van Slyke and the program manager is Parsons. This will be YLH's second project with Parsons and Fulton County Schools.
5.2.08 - YLH Announces Hiring of Dave Yuhas
YLH is pleased to announce that Dave Yuhas joined the company as a Project Manager. In addition to running selected projects, Dave will also be leading YLH’s Preconstruction efforts. Dave brings extensive experience to YLH including work in the Commercial Office, High-rise Multifamily, Mixed Use, Data Center, Recreational, K-12 and Higher Education markets. Project highlights include the Candler Library at Emory University, Gwinnett Arena, American Express Minneapolis Data Center, Air Force Armament Museum Education Building and Magnolia Springs Elementary School among many others. Dave spent 5 years with Holder Construction Company in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. and most recently worked for Lord and Son Construction of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management degree from Purdue University.
2.25.08 – Groundbreaking of Cobb County Public Safety Village Education Building
YLH Construction broke ground on the Cobb County Public Safety Village Education Building on Monday. The event was attended by the Cobb County Commission, the Public Safety Commission and various members of Cobb County’s Fire, Police and Sheriff’s Departments. The Education Building will be a 27,000 SF building housing classrooms, auditorium, offices and a special interactive fire safety house. To symbolize the primary use of the building, the ground breaking was performed by students from nearby Millford Elementary School. YLH partnered with Pieper, O’Brien, Herr Architects on this Design/Build project. The ground breaking took place 1 month ahead of schedule.
9.4.07 – Design/Build Contract for Cobb County Public Safety Village Education Building Awarded to YLH
On Tuesday, Cobb County awarded the Design/Build Contract for the Cobb County Public Safety Education Building to YLH Construction Company. This $4.55 million project will be the centerpiece of the new Cobb Public Safety Village. It will be a 30,000 SF building housing an auditorium, classrooms, office space, multi-purpose space and a special "apartment" capable of simulating residential fires. This will be the largest facility of this type in the United States. YLH teamed with Pieper, O'Brien, Herr Architects and Lowe Engineers for the project and Randy Meeker is proposed as the Superintendant. Read more about this project in the Marietta Daily Journal.
6.14.07 – Appalachian Technical College Renovation Awarded to YLH
The Georgia DTAE awarded the renovation of the Appalachian Technical College to YLH Construction Co. The project is valued at $856,000 and consists of the renovation of 12,000 square feet of classrooms, offices and labs at the college's campus in Jasper, Georgia. This is YLH's first project with the Department of Technical and Adult Education.
4.28.07 – Groundbreaking of Clayton State University's School of Business

4.25.07 – Clayton State University School of Business Awarded to YLH
The State Board of Regents of Georgia awarded the contract for construction of the Clayton State University School of Business to YLH Construction Company. This is a two story, 16,500 sf facility with insulated concrete formed walls and steel structure. The skin will be granite, brick and curtain wall. This will be a signature building for the CSU campus and YLH's first higher education project. The architect is Flynn - Finderup Architects and the contract amount is $3,330,000.
1.5.07 – YLH Obtains Certificate of Occupancy for Addition at Holcomb Bridge Middle School
YLH completed the Addition to the Holcomb Bridge Middle School and achieved Final Certificate of Occupancy on January 5, 2007, two weeks ahead of schedule. This early completion allowed students and faculty to move in immediately upon their return from the Holiday break. In addition to the original scope of work, Fulton County Schools requested additional plumbing to 6 new labs after many of the final finishes were in place. YLH assisted with designing the systems to avoid demolishing much of the completed work and overcame the delay to minimize impact to the project schedule. YLH's first project with Fulton County Schools was a tremendous success in large part due to the team effort between YLH's Superintendent Steve Phillips, Parsons and the faculty and staff at Holcomb Bridge Middle School.
10.15.06 – YLH Awarded The Contract to Build New Georgia D.O.T. Office Building
YLH is the General Contractor for the Georgia Department of Transportation's Large Area Office Building #44. The project is a new 8,000 square foot CFMF structure with a brick skin and standing steam roof. It is located at the corner of Welcome All Road and Roosevelt Highway in Fulton County, Georgia. YLH will break ground in November and complete the project in September 2007.
9.15.06 – Cobb County School Board Awards Addition to Hightower Trail Middle School to YLH Construction Company
YLH is the general contractor for the addition and renovation to Hightower Trail Middle School in Marietta, Georgia. This project will include new classrooms and new practice space for the school's band and orchestra. YLH will break ground in October and will complete the job in May 2007. YLH will also renovate portions of the existing school and gymnasium during the summer of 2007.
8.11.06 – YLH Receives CO for the Interior Renovations of Holcomb Bridge Middle School
YLH met a very aggressive schedule to obtain the Certificate of Occupancy for the renovation of five Science Labs at Holcomb Bridge Middle School in Roswell, Georgia. The Fulton County School Board awarded the project to YLH in May. Demolition began the day after school let out for summer 2006 and was completed before the students arrived back for the 2006-2007 school year. YLH is now working on an addition to the school which will be completed in January 2007.
